English

English Grammar & Writing/Phonics

Grade Level: K5-2nd

  • This course will guide your child to mastery in phonics, reading, spelling, grammar, and writing. We will be using the curriculum Sing, Spell, Read, and Write to accomplish this goal. It addresses every child's learning style through a multi-sensory approach. In addition, each child will get to dive into age and learning level appropriate books. Games and art will also be a part of each class to strengthen the skills learned in our weekly lesson. This is a comprehensive program which provides your children with all the tools they will need to succeed in a 3-year rotation. Students will love learning through the program's phonics songs, games, and fun exercises/routines that use music to build lasting skills. Related field trips are being considered.

  • You will not need to purchase any textbooks. We have purchased all the textbooks needed for this course.

  • This course establishes a foundation of the I.E.W. curriculum, which includes outlining, note-taking, summarizing, and essay writing. It also assists in establishing the fundamentals of the English language. The students will travel through a magic wardrobe and into a fantasy world named Narnia. They will fight alongside Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy to restore order throughout Narnia while learning how to develop keyword outlines. They will also travel to Soviet Russia where a boy named Sasha breaks Stalin’s nose. During this journey, the students will learn about the MLA Format and the different styles and dress-ups of the I.E.W. curriculum. After this, students will experience friendship, courage, and self-sacrifice with Wilbur as a result of his friend, Charlotte. Finally, students will experience a lesson in humility along with Mr. Toad, Ratty, Badger, and Mole.

The Middle Ages

  • Join us on a journey to make history come alive. Students will experience the Middle Ages straight into the Renaissance Era, from the fall of Rome to the rise of the Renaissance and awakening of the mind and arts. Through map work and discussion, students will begin to see the connection between how cultures and past world events have shaped the world they experience today. Crafts, art, taste testing, demonstrations, experiments, and puzzles will used to aid in the knowledge and appreciation of the history of the countries and cultures that make up our world. Weekly reading assignments will allow students to take control of their own learning experience outside of the classroom. Students will be encouraged to take notes in class and ask questions both during class time and during the week via phone, email, or by designated personal sessions. There will be homework each week that will be graded for both completion and accuracy.

Elementary Art Class

  • This course will give students the opportunity to learn technique while creating their own individual styles. Students will also explore color, line, value, and much more. They will have the opportunity to draw from life, as much as possible, while improving on their learned skills by observing the world around them. After all, we can think of our beautiful world as one big canvas created and painted by the magnificent hands of God, Our Master Artist. Students are encouraged to take notes in class and ask questions both during class time and during the week via phone, email, or by designated personal sessions. Drama

  • Why teach drama to elementary school kids? Well, because it's fun, of course! More than just fun, drama opens a whole world of creative thinking, problem solving, positive self-image, communication, cooperation, and a plethora of other positive learning experiences in a safe environment designed to incorporate and encourage group building and ensemble. In the fall, we will use workshops to explore aspects of drama and acting such as spatial awareness, movement, expression and gesture. We will also explore character, storytelling, pantomime, and more! The first semester will end with an in-class performance that will help prepare students for a spring production in April or May (date TBA). It's going to be an exciting year in our elementary drama class as we learn to worship God through His gift of theater. Come "play" with us at MHA!

    Please note: Drama productions typically generate costs unusual to most classroom settings. Within the first few weeks of class, parents will have the opportunity to vote to do either fundraisers or to pay an out-of-pocket production fee. If the vote is for fundraisers, there will be at least one in the fall. Should the vote fall to the production fee, it will be due by October 15. Drama families, keep an eye on emails for details!

  • No book. There is a script fee for your child's spring performance. It will be no more than $8 and will be due when scripts are ordered. Students need to bring a 3-ring binder (1/2 to 1 inch), paper, dividers, pens, pencils, and their script to class.

For this particular grade level, this course will include and address the visual gestural language by using illustrations and scripts for signed sequences. Students will have drills on gestural exercises taught in class. Throughout the semesters, there will be several short dialogues which review the language structures discussed in the preceding class lessons. Students are encouraged to take notes in class whenever possible and ask questions both during class time and during the week via phone, email, or by designated personal sessions. There will be homework each week to both introduce new material that will be discussed in class the following week and also to review what was learned in class the previous week. Homework will be graded for both completion and accuracy. Students will also be graded on tests and potential projects. Related field trips are being considered.

  • In this course, we will focus on learning through immersion! Students will listen to songs, movies, and stories in Japanese in class and on their own at home to encourage learning. We will also cover the basics of hiragana, katakana, and a few kanji throughout the year, along with a variety of vocabulary.

    NOTE: Mrs. Autumn Skiles has moved to the state of Pennsylvania and will continue to teach this class online through Google Meet. If your child has a class before or after this class, we will facilitate a classroom with adult supervision.

  • This class will be a gentle introduction to Spanish. The class will not be completely conducted in Spanish because we believe that it would be too stressful for some children to comprehend, but as the class grows in understanding, the teacher will speak to them more and more in Spanish. When speaking to the children in Spanish, a limited vocabulary will be used and strive (by actions, pictures, or words) to make sure the children understand the meaning. Songs and simple pieces of literature will be utilized to expose the students to authentic language. Lots of games will also be played. Initially, the teacher will be the one talking the most; the students will be asked to show understanding non-verbally at first. After four or five months, the children will be encouraged to speak in Spanish, first words, then short sentences. If young students are given enough time to listen to the language, they will develop a better ear for the sounds and have a better accent later. At this level, since some students may still be learning to read in English and to avoid confusion, written language will be limited. The curriculum includes lots of comprehensive input, covers common topics (the family, pets, the weather, etc.), and is lots of FUN for the students.

Knitting

Grade Level: 3rd-5th

Instructor: Mrs. Michelle Young

Day / Time: Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. - 11:40 a.m.

  • In this course, students will learn basic stitches, how to knit in the round (think 'hats' and socks', etc.), and how to hold their hook or needles in the way that works best for them. They will make beautiful projects that look much more complicated than they really are. Students will also learn to read and write patterns so they can re-visit some of their favorite creations, or find new ones. For Christmas, they will create 'Love Projects' that will be given to the elderly and the homeless.

  • 2 skeins of "I Love This Yarn" brand synthetic yarn from Hobby Lobby, one being multicolored, the other being a solid color that matches the multicolor. Please avoid solid black because it is much harder to see the stitches when using very dark colors.

    1 crochet hook, size I-9

    1 set of ChiaoGoo brand (preferred) circular knitting needles, size 8. This brand uses a metal wire coated with plastic for the cord that goes between the needles. Other brands use a plastic cord that usually gets in the way of making the stitches. We want new and seasoned artisans to stay encouraged throughout their projects. They are available at Amazon.com.

    1 darning needle (plastic or metal) for working in ends

    1 pair small scissors sharp enough to cut yarn well

    1 stitch marker - we recommend getting 1 small bag of safety pin bulb stitch markers. These markers are made of thin metal in the shape of a light bulb, with a safety pin open and close end. They can be added to any part of the project at any time, and used for crocheting in addition to knitting. The thinness of the metal helps prevent 'laddering' in your knitting.

    Recommended, but not required: a small bag or box to keep supplies organized.

Beginner Music

Grade Level: K5-4th

  • This class provides opportunities for students to be creative while working with others. Our goal is to help students become comfortable sharing their singing and other musical talents in a creative and spontaneous environment. Join us this year, as we introduce students to the wonderful world of music! This class is designed to introduce students to basic music history and listening skills as we hear and discuss music from the Baroque to the Modern Era. We will also focus a large part of our class time on basic note and rhythm reading skills as students learn how to play the recorder and how to write short songs on their own. Concepts covered will include rhythm, melody, steady beat, musical notation, pitch, form, timbre, composition, tempo, dynamics, intervals, and solfege. Activities will include singing, moving, listening, performing, composing/improvising, playing various instruments, recorders, and reading/writing music. Students will be given 1-2 pages of homework each week which counts as part of their grade. They will also be expected to practice their recorders 5-10 minutes most days of the week. Physical Education

Grade Level: K5-5th

  • Our PE program consists of a short devotional followed by warm ups, stretches, calisthenics, sport of the week, and so much more. We teach over the fundamentals of baseball/softball, soccer, flag football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Every PE student will not only be strengthened physically, but also spiritually as we strive to fulfill God's calling by starting each class with a prayer and a short Bible devotional using the "Sticky Situations" book for our elementary school age group. In keeping a well rounded program, we have also incorporated several field trips per semester which consist of swimming, hiking/canoeing, horseback riding, and so much more. At the end of the year, every child receives a certificate of participation and a few will receive a metal and/or trophy for a special recognition and excellence in the class. Through this program, all our students can also enjoy interacting with one another and building lasting friendships, while at the same time working on keeping their minds and bodies healthy through exercise as we work on strength, endurance, coordination, flexibility, and agility.

Robotics

Grade Level: 4th-5th

Instructor: Mrs. Michelle Young

Day / Time: Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. - 10:20 a.m.

  • Build, code & play with Robots! This class starts with 8-10 weeks of robotics where we'll lead students through building with gears, axles, dc motors, switches, IR sensors, LEDs, servo motors and the Arduino mainboard. Every few weeks, we'll build a different robot and use those robots in an activity or competition. Examples include the Knight Robot for battle bots, Flag Football bot, Soccer Bot and Wand Following Bot. As students become adept at building robots, we'll then introduce coding concepts. Students will learn how to use loops, wait statements, IF-THEN-ELSE statements and more to control their robots. Each coding class will have a challenge that will teach our young engineers how to use Scratch coding to make their robots complete a task autonomously.

Typing / Computer Skills

Grade Level: 4th-5th

Instructor: Mrs. Michelle Young

Day / Time: Wednesday at 11:50 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

  • This course will teach students the basic skills to use and operate computers. The class will focus on typing, Microsoft Word, and basic email etiquette; however, there will be an introduction to Power Point and Excel as well. Classes will consist of a short lecture introducing new terms, a short quiz, and an activity to apply what they have learned. Throughout the week, students will be expected to practice their keyboarding skills and the skills learned in each lesson. Students will also learn the importance of internet safety with interactive games. By the end of this course, students will be able to properly operate a computer and be able to type 10-20 words per minute.

  • Materials required for Typing Class: Each student will need a laptop that has internet capabilities, along with a power cable that will be brought to each class. The laptop will need to contain a word processing program (i.e. Word, Word Perfect, etc.)

    Parents will need to create an account for their child at typing.com so that their progress is recorded. Homework should be emailed to the teacher every week. Our goal is for the students to learn to type without having to look at the keyboard by the end of the school year. This will be accomplished through lessons, homework, fun typing games, and challenges, and will give them skills to last a lifetime.
