                          COMPUTER CLASSES / WEB DESIGN

We are delighted to be able to provide Computer and Typing Skills Courses for our elementary school through high school students this coming fall and spring semesters. As God continues to expand our ministry, we are eternally thankful for His vision and His provisions. Once again, we have done our best to keep our fees reasonable and affordable for our home school community. Our schedule and fees are as follows: (Please scroll down for a description of each course). 

Course: Basic Typing/Keyboarding and Computer Skills Course

Grade Level: 4th - 5th grade

Day/Time: Tuesdays @ 12:40 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. 

Cost: $50 per month per child + $30 registration fee

Course: Basic Web Design Course

Grade Level: 6th - 8th grade (5th graders can register)

Day/Time: Tuesdays @ 2:15 - 3:45 p.m.

Cost: $60 per month per child + $40 registration fee

Course Description

Basic Typing/Keyboarding and Computer Skills (4th - 5th grade)

This course will teach students the basic skills to use and operate computers. The class will focus on typing, Microsoft Word, and basic email etiquette; however, there will be an introduction to Power Point and Excel as well. Classes will consist of a short lecture introducing new terms, a short quiz, and an activity to apply what they have learned. Throughout the week, students will be expected to practice their keyboarding skills and the skills learned in each lesson. Students will also learn the importance of internet safety with interactive games. By the end of this course, students will be able to properly operate a computer and be able to type 10-20 words per minute. Requirements: a laptop to bring to class with Windows 10 or higher, Microsoft Office Suite, 1-inch 3-ring binder, paper and pencils. A computer mouse and a wireless keyboard are recommended but not required.   

 

Basic Web Design Course (6th - 8th grade)

This course will introduce students to the language of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with fun, project-oriented lessons. Students will be provided with a variety of resources in addition to their textbook. Classes will consist of a short lecture introducing new terms, a vocabulary quiz, and an activity to apply what they have learned. Throughout the week, students will be expected to practice what they have learned and test out new ideas using the resources given. There will be an HTML and CSS project, a final website project, and a final practical exam. Students will also learn the importance of internet safety with interactive games. By the end of this course, students will have a solid foundation of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and will have the tools to go out and learn more on their own. Requirements: Basic typing and computer skills, a laptop to bring to class with Windows 7 or higher, 1-inch 3-ring binder, paper and pencils.  


Computer Programming Course (9th - 12th grade) - Fall Semester - (Pre-requisite for High School Robotics)
This course will provide our students with a solid introduction to programming with Python. Developed by computer science instructors, this book will teach the principles of programming through simple game creation. Students will acquire the skills needed for practical Python programming applications and will learn how these skills can be put to use in real-world scenarios. Throughout the chapters, students will see code samples that illustrate concepts presented. At the end of each chapter, students will find a complete game that demonstrates the key ideas in the chapter, a summary of the chapter, and a set of challenges that tests their  newfound knowledge. By the end of this course, students will be well versed in Python and be able to apply the basic programming principles learned to the next programming language they decide to pursue. Requirement: A laptop to bring to class with Windows 7 or higher, a 3-ring binder, paper, and pencils. This course is a pre-requisite for the high school Robotics class.    

Intermediate Office Technology Course (8th - 12th grade) - Fall Semester (Not offered during 2021-22 school year)

This class is designed to give students the basic required office skills to create resumes, create cover letters, create spreadsheets, manage office databases, create presentations, edit photos, and do basic animations.  With this class, your student will be prepared to use the required office tools in college and throughout the rest of high school.

  - An Adobe Creative Cloud Student account (http://www.adobe.com) - $19.99/month
  - A laptop with:  Windows 7, 8, 8.1, OR 10, power supply, up to date antivirus, wireless, mouse, and 20 GB free space
Recommended Academic Requirements: Pre-Algebra


A+ Preparation Course (9th - 12th grade) - Spring Semester (This course will not be offered during 2021 -2022 school year) 

This course will guide students through troubleshooting and maintaining computers.  If your student has an interest in pursuing a career in information technology or the ability to maintain systems at home, this course will be a cornerstone for future development.  After this course, students will be better prepared for A+ exams 220-901 and 220-902, and will serve as a highlight on their resume.  Upon passing the A+ exams, your student can prove to future employers that they are well capable of handling a computer technician role and set them up for future information technology career paths.

Optional Requirements:
  - Although a laptop isn't required, having one can be helpful.
  - Your student will be better prepared to take the CompTIA A+ exam after this course and can be taken at a local college in their proctored exam area.
