AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

Course Description
Elementary American Sign Language (K5 - 1st grade)
In this course, students will be learning beginning vocabulary and basic Deaf culture. For this particular grade level, this course will include and address the visual gestural language by using illustrations and scripts for signed sequences. Students will have drills on gestural exercises taught in class. Throughout the semesters, there will be several short dialogues which review the language structures discussed in the preceding class lessons. Students are encouraged to take notes in class whenever possible and ask questions both during class time and during the week via phone, email, or by designated personal sessions. There will be homework each week to both introduce new material that will be discussed in class the following week and also to review what was learned in class the previous week. Homework will be graded for both completion and accuracy. Students will also be graded on tests and potential projects. Related field trips are being considered.

Middle School American Sign Language (5th - 8th grade)
In this course, students will be learning vocabulary, Deaf culture and American Sign Language grammar. The book we have chosen for this particular grade level does a great job at addressing the visual gestural language by using illustrations and scripts for signed sequences. Basic Course in American Sign Language is composed of 22 lessons each of which contains two to four basic explanations of the language structures to be learned. As a resource for the student, a drill or exercises follows. Spaced at intervals throughout the text are several short dialogues which review the language structures discussed in the preceding lessons. Students are encouraged to take notes in class and ask questions both during class time and during the week via phone, email, or by designated personal sessions. There will be homework each week to both introduce new material that will be discussed in class the following week and also to review what was learned in class the previous week. Homework will be graded for both completion and accuracy. Students will also be graded on tests and potential projects. Related field trips are being considered.
High School American Sign Language (9th - 11th grade)

I. This course is an introduction to American Sign Language. vocabulary, grammar, and some Deaf culture will be studied.
II. Purpose - Students will learn basic conversational ASL as well as gain a foundation in ASL grammar and Deaf culture.
III. Objectives – Students will learn at least 500 vocabulary words, be able to carry on a basic conversation in American Sign Language, fingerspell, and sign to 500.
IV. Materials Used – Lessons 12-22 in the book A Basic Course in American Sign Language, paper, and pencils or pens. Students will also need to be able to watch videos posted to the Michaels Homeschool Families Facebook page or email.
